Developing Leaders Notes

Date: 12-8-17

Session Title: Working with Building Principals

Focus Area: Program Evaluations

MAASE Focus Areas:

We will align and organize the strategic priorities and work of MAASE to focus on the following elements:

High Quality Student Evaluations

Specially Designed  Instruction

Skilled Staff

Program Evaluation

Through the platforms of:

Association Partnerships

Legislative Action and Advocacy

Professional Learning

Membership Services

EdCamp is an open format where group members share thoughts to help one another in implementation of "real life" practice. These notes reflect the thinking of someone in the group but do not represent an official position on behalf of MAASE. Anyone using this as a resource is encouraged to use their best judgement in interpreting the suggestions.

MAASE EdCamp Format:

  1. Clarify the Problem of Practice to Solve

  2. Collaborate around the Problem of Practice by offering suggestions and resources

  3. Give feedback to the committee on how to improve next time

Notes:

*How do we help building principals understand the rules (as we are not there on a daily basis)?

*How do you work on building relationships? What does that schedule look like?

Suggestions:

-Giving copies of rules (etc.) so it doesn’t look like an individual best practice, but rather based in rule.

-Creating a student discipline support handbook

-Creating technology (secured data spaces) for easy building access

-High level work with relationship building (i.e. drop ins, not necessarily formal)

-Google numbers - so parents have THAT phone number (for teachers)

-Setting up “go to people” for principals within the building to whom they can connect

-Setting up monthly meetings for districts to send a rep. for updates

-Meet with new principals at the beginning more in-depth

-District consultant (to work on district wide supports)

*504’s

*seclusion and restraint (general info meetings)

*restorative justice circles

*risk assessments

-Community coaching team (to support teachers in the classroom)

*psych, SW, master teacher, etc.

*Not admin, supervisors, evaluators, etc.

Behavior Support Suggestions:

-AFIRM modules (some HS students use these for credit - peer-to-peer)

*Watch people in practice

*30 modules

*Free

*Tough Kid Toolbox

Feedback:

  • What made this time worth your while?

  • What specifically can we do to make this better?
