Developing Leaders Notes

Date: 12/6/17

Session Title: SDI / Eligibility

Focus Area:SDI

MAASE Focus Areas:

We will align and organize the strategic priorities and work of MAASE to focus on the following elements:

High Quality Student Evaluations

Specially Designed  Instruction

Skilled Staff

Program Evaluation

Through the platforms of:

Association Partnerships

Legislative Action and Advocacy

Professional Learning

Membership Services

EdCamp is an open format where group members share thoughts to help one another in implementation of "real life" practice. These notes reflect the thinking of someone in the group but do not represent an official position on behalf of MAASE. Anyone using this as a resource is encouraged to use their best judgement in interpreting the suggestions.

MAASE EdCamp Format:

  1. Clarify the Problem of Practice to Solve

  2. Collaborate around the Problem of Practice by offering suggestions and resources

  3. Give feedback to the committee on how to improve next time

Notes:

  • How are other counties/locals providing inclusive opportunities for children with IEPs?

    • CHAREM and other areas developing a model of ancillary staff / special education staff push-into HS/GSRP, some have 3’s that attend tuition and services are provided within that setting.

    • Options are more plentiful in areas that have an early childhood building where multiple programs are running at the same time and staff have easy access to one another.

    • In Farmington- If a parent chooses to enroll in private preschool special education pays for just the small portion of time they are receiving special education under 1755

    • Different rules around Head Start/GSRP cause complications with number of children on IEPs, option for shared day

    • If 50% of children in a setting do not have IEPs it will count as an inclusive setting

    • Some places provide services for children that they have transitioned out of ECSE into a general education setting

    • Some blended programs provide specialized transportation to reduce the barrier of children accessing LRE

    • Inclusive playgroup settings

    • Teacher must have “contact” at least once per month under 1755

  • What does transition from EO/MMSE look like

    • Depends who runs MMSE and 3-5, different in each county

    • Parent and child go on visit, develop transition plan

    • Various practices for transition

    • Some transitions include local staff doing a joint visit with EO provider to help determine what future programming may be appropriate

    • Some hold IEP at local district, varies who is the district rep

    • CAPTA

Feedback:

  • What made this time worth your while?

  • What specifically can we do to make this better?
